About the Event
Pathways to HPC Talk: Mathematics Meets Machines: My Journey into High-Performance Computing
Abstract:
Professor Zhiling Lan will guide the audience through a personal journey, tracing from undergraduate studies in mathematics to the current role as a professor and researcher in high-performance computing (HPC). The talk will explore the decision to pursue a PhD in HPC, the path to becoming a professor, and insights into balancing a career with family commitments. The audience is invited to join in reflecting on this journey, sharing insights gained, and exploring the synergies between mathematics and machines in the realm of high-performance computing.
Bio:
Zhiling Lan received her PhD degree in Computer Engineering from Northwestern University in 2002. She is currently a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois Chicago. She is also a Guest Research Faculty at Argonne National Laboratory. She was a Professor of Computer Science at the Illinois Institute of Technology between 2002 and 2023. Her research interests lie in the field of high-performance computing (HPC), with particular emphasis on resource management and job scheduling, performance modeling and simulation, fault tolerance, and power efficiency. She has co-authored over 120 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. She has served as an Editorial Board Member for IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems from 2014 to 2018, as well as program track chair and program committee member for various international conferences such as SC, IPDPS, HPDC, ACM ICS, IEEE Cluster, IEEE/ACM CCGrid, among others.
Schedule:
What is HPC: 5:10 - 5:30 PM
In this presentation, Ana Marija Sokovic will delve into the fundamentals of high-performance computing (HPC) and some real-world applications.
Pathways to HPC Talk : 5:30 - 6:00 PM
In this talk Professor Lan will share her personal journey from undergraduate studies in mathematics to becoming a professor and researcher in high-performance computing, discussing the decision to pursue a PhD, the challenges of balancing career and family, and reflecting on insights gained while exploring the intersection of mathematics and machines in HPC.
GROUP ACTIVITY: 6:00 - 6:30 PM
In this session, we will invite participants to brainstorm in small groups about the concepts introduced and the role of women and minorities in HPC and computing.
